TRACING SPACE
Matthew Rachman Gallery is pleased to present Tracing Space, Ted Stanuga's first solo exhibition at the gallery, curated by Martha Morimoto. The exhibition opens on Friday, September 14th with a reception from 6 - 9pm and will continue through October 28th.
Tracing Space brings to light a retrospective of intuitive gestural abstractions by Chicago artist, Ted Stanuga. Rhythmic and gestural, Stanuga’s meditative process allows a life of painting to show through. His experimental practice begins with a drawing, where he then begins to curate, obliterate, and simplify. At times sanding the initial layer, Stanuga redraws moments in various colors, shades, and material, leaving aspects of previous layers visible.
Stanuga choreographs his lines to stretch, dive, wrap, and swirl around the surface. Marking each line and brushstroke thoughtfully against the others, he arranges forms across his canvases. Accompanied by his attention to color mixing and technical processes, Stanuga builds sharply composed pictures that are expressive of his experiences.
